So, it appears we will be out for the classroom for a bit. First, let me say to all of you seniors that I’m disappointed for what you’ll be missing. These final months are special ones in your lives and the lost moments; the plays, sports, and other events are significant. Having said that better days are ahead as high school is overrated. :/
We will continue with the planned simulations. You have already begun the supreme court simulation and fortunately you had the opportunity to select cases, and learn a little of the research process necessary to participate in the eventual simulation (i.e. written brief, oral argument and justice participation). At this point we will focus on these research components, as well as learn about interpreting the constitution through some excellent podcasts.
Step 1: Break down the case and identify precedent(s).
Under the American Government heading above select the Government Resource Page: scroll down to SC Simulation: case_breakdown.pdf. Download the file and print it if you have that capability. If not then use it as a guide and recreate it on paper. It’s fairly straight forward. At this point think about the case from both sides and remember your cases and names are fictional!
Note: Once I am allowed back in my classroom I’ll get paper copies of all these handouts and leave them for you to pick up at JDHS if you don’t have access to a printer.
Meanwhile I will be connecting with each of you through email as soon as Donna provides me with your emails and through future email and phone conversations (I plan on having “office hours” so I can help you with the research) we will navigate this crazy time together. My goal is to enrich your “quarantine” with cool stuff that I find interesting and educationally relevant. So, stay safe, trust the scientists and talk to you soon.
