LRI Example: Voir Dire (Jury Selection) Activity

I have been so focused on getting this law related issue finished that I haven’t responded to your submissions yesterday. I will today. I learned some things doing this as distance delivery exercise. It is much harder than doing it in person; teaching it. :/ But, we will move forward and see how it works as a stand-alone document.

Step 1: Go to the website lehnhartrm232 and find LRI-Voir Dire Activity pdf on the Law Resources page. Open it and print it off. If you can’t print it off, you can create your own voir dire worksheet on a piece of paper. The first page is the part I would normally teach, and looking at it in printed form I realize there is a lot of info on that page. Work through it as there is meaningful stuff there and the crime for the activity is on the bottom.

Step 2: Before you do the activity I would like you to listen to a podcast. It’s excellent! Search Radiolab: More Perfect – Object Anyway. PLUG IN, GO OUTSIDE AND GET SOME EXERCISE WHILE YOU LISTEN!

Step 3: Now you’re ready for the activity (pg 2). Follow the directions.

Step 4: Submit your decisions to me via email. All you need to do is send me the numbers. For example;
Mr. Lehnhart, I removed the following jurors (prosecution) jurors 4,7,24, 13,21, 15 and for the (defense) 23,1,17,22,6,19. Please put them in the order you made your selections.

Step 5: Thursday we will be holding a zoom class during our allotted time 1-2:00pm. I will send you info on that later. During that hour we will discuss the results of your submissions (the jurors you removed) so please get them into me on Wednesday. I’ll also clarify and take questions on completing the LRI activity.

Use the next two days and the weekend to lock in your topic. If you are struggling contact me and let me help. Instructions on how to do that is on the email I sent. Remember to choose a law related issue that will have enough complexity to yield a good activity. An activity that motivates us and educates us! Most importantly choose something you are interested in and care about!

So, it appears we will be out for the classroom for a bit. First, let me say to all of you seniors that I’m disappointed for what you’ll be missing. These final months are special ones in your lives and the lost moments; the plays, sports, and other events are significant. Having said that better days are ahead as high school is overrated. :/

I introduced Law Related Issues prior to us parting.

Step 1: You should be researching potential law related issues that you are curious about and interested in building an activity around.
Under the American Law heading above select the Law Resource Page: scroll down to Law Related Issue: lri_syllabus.pdf. This document was created to be used in class so it will have to be modified to do online. For now, use it to help generate ideas and begin the research process. I will be posting examples online soon, so at this point GET AN IDEA to present to me for approval.

Meanwhile I will be connecting with each of you through email as soon as Donna provides me with your emails and through future email and phone conversations (I plan on having “office hours” so I can help you with the research) we will navigate this crazy time together.  My goal is to enrich your “quarantine” with cool stuff that I find interesting and educationally relevant. So, stay safe, trust the scientists and talk to you soon.
